The Tree of the Year 2022 is a sitka spruce in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, near the Systrafoss waterfall. This is the first tree in Iceland to reach 30 m in height in modern times. The tree was planted in 1949 and the small forest it stands in is now supervised by the Icelandic Forest Service. The tree was formally nominated with a ceremony in September 2022 and its height measured by the Prime minister of Iceland, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, with guidance from experts at the Icelandic Forest Service. It’s measured height was 30,15 m, with a trunk radius of 49,9 cm at chest height.
